Gillman Rio Grande Valley Dealerships’ Highly Successful 7th Annual “Drive for Attendance” Program to Support Harlingen Central Independent School District Goes Virtual!

The Gillman team in the Rio Grande Valley first partnered with Superintendent Dr. Art Cavazos and other top personnel from the Harlingen Central Independent School District (HCISD) in 2013. Their goal was to motivate students and improve class participation. So they created the “Drive for Attendance” program. Overwhelming success in the first year generated a decision to make this an annual event.

Students with perfect attendance records, which qualifies them for winning awards provided by the Gillman Rio Grande Valley team, have shown substantial growth each year. For 2020, 713 HCISD sophomores, juniors and seniors made the grade.

In past years, school bands and cheerleaders helped make the announcement of the winners an exciting occasion. This year’s awards, due to the pandemic, became a virtual event carried by the HCISD website. There was still excitement and enthusiasm as students learned which of them would win the car, laptop computers and gift cards.

Gillman Chevrolet Harlingen General Manager David Amaya noted, “Gillman Chevrolet is proud to be the founding sponsor...” and “Drive for Attendance provides an opportunity to give back to the community while giving Harlingen CISD a program that generates additional income to educate our students though an effort that encourages excellent attendance.” For every student in class, HCISD receives state funds from the Texas Education Agency.

The Drive for Attendance program is widely recognized as one of the most innovative academic efforts in the nation.
A fitting Gillman “Way to go!” to all involved.

“The only thing worse than training your employees and having them leave is NOT training them and having them stay.” – Henry Ford

That quote, from a man well versed in the automobile business, is as true today as it was back then. Top performance requires constant training. Sports teams know this, racing teams know this, the military lives by this rule and successful businesses continue to grow as training sharpens skills.

Let’s use the added time we have due to the pandemic to our advantage! No one is so good in their position that there isn’t room for improvement. Strive to get the most out of our Gillman Success Days activities. If you do, you will improve your skills and abilities.

The 20-Foot Rule

At Gillman dealerships, our number one priority is building customer trust and loyalty. So first impressions are very important.

One of the strongest negative experiences a person can have is to walk into a store and stand there being ignored by people who should be of assistance. When that happens, many people leave the premises, never to return.
Preventing that and trying to ease the awkward tension we all feel in a new situation is at the heart of our 20-Foot Rule.

It is every Gillman team member’s job, whenever they pass within 20 feet of an obviously unattended customer, to immediately stop and render assistance. It only takes a few seconds to be sure that person is being helped, and those few seconds can make the difference between gaining a friend for life and losing an individual’s business forever.

Let our customers know how much we appreciate them visiting our stores by lending a helping hand and showing our friendly Gillman spirit.

Gillman Marketing Builds Greater Impact and User Convenience into the Gillman Dealership Website!

The importance of a well-designed, functional and visually attractive website for any company doing business in today’s environment cannot be overstated. A website is the company’s gateway to the world. This has proven to be especially true in the retail automobile business.

Redesign of a website is mandatory if an organization is to keep pace with new technological opportunities. The goal is to present potential customers with an easy way to do business from the location of their choice.

This project has taken several weeks and is expected to be completed by the time this newsletter is published.

Promoting from Within the Gillman Team!

“The best person for the job!” That was Ramsay Gillman’s cardinal rule for hiring. “Give team members every opportunity for advancement” was another of his axioms. Combined, the two dictate a key Gillman Companies operating philosophy. Simply stated, it is “Whenever possible, promote from within.”

Please congratulate the following Gillman staff member who has earned a promotion and moved forward in his career.

Anthony Dismute, formerly Sales Manager with Gillman Subaru San Antonio, has been promoted to the position of Used Vehicle Director with Gillman Mitsubishi San Antonio.

If you see Anthony, give him a big Gillman “Way to go!”

During day-to-day activities, take the following measures to prevent infection:

• Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds or use an alcohol-based sanitizer.
• Avoid touching your eyes with unwashed hands.
• Stay home if you are sick, except to get medical care.
• Cover your nose and mouth when coughing or sneezing into a tissue or your elbow, never your hands.
• Clean and disinfect surfaces around your work area frequently.
• Wear a face covering when you are not alone.
• Avoid close contact, maintain a 6-foot distance.

It’s better to be cautious and practice these tips to keep you and those around you safe.

Letter from a Satisfied and Loyal Customer

My car buying experience with Mr. Manny Maraghi at Gillman Subaru Southwest in Houston, TX was outstanding in every regard. Amid the coronavirus pandemic, Manny was very considerate in offering to bring the SUV for a test drive and the paperwork to my home if I wasn’t comfortable visiting the dealership. As a senior citizen, I certainly appreciated the offer, but I was comfortable completing the transaction at the dealership. I reciprocated to make Manny feel more at ease by describing my personal circumstances in isolation for two weeks prior to our meeting to eliminate the possibility I could infect others.

I was forthright with Manny from the beginning to explain that the Subaru Forester STI Base Model satisfied my modest requirements with only a few options desired. I felt throughout the process that Manny listened carefully and always respected my wishes. I never felt pressured to accept unnecessary options or upgrade to more expensive trim levels (Premium, Sport, Limited, Touring). This made the entire process very pleasant and comfortable for me.

Manny was respectful and friendly and maintained a calm and patient demeanor throughout. He was extremely helpful and efficient in describing the features of the Forester and even offered a possible workaround for the one feature I wanted but is missing from the STI Base Model (no built-in wifi hotspot for my laptop computer).

I was grateful that Manny honored the price quote that had been given to me via the dealership internet website by Irma Evangelista, a Subaru Certified Customer Care Specialist. There was never any hint of bait-and-switch tactics in this deal and that showed their great integrity and honesty in my opinion. Manny went above and beyond to obtain a $750 rebate for me that was offered by Subaru, valid through the end of March. As a result, I believe I got a terrific deal based on verified, published data for other purchases of similarly equipped Subaru Forester STI models in our geographical area. As someone living on a fixed income, this was very important to me. After purchasing the SUV, I really appreciated Manny’s kindness to personally deliver the SUV to my home later in the evening.

The business manager that handled the paperwork and payment for my purchase, Mr. Tho Chau, was very conscientious, describing the procedures that had been followed to ensure the cleanliness of the office and desk and he even offered some disposable, latex gloves for my use (I declined). The involved paperwork that is typical when purchasing a new vehicle was handled efficiently and my questions were answered completely. He thoroughly explained a windshield protection plan that was offered to help defray the substantial cost to recalibrate the Subaru EyeSight system in the event of damage to the windshield. His explanation of the benefits and cost was clear, but I never felt pressured to accept the offer.

Overall, the sales service provided and professionalism exhibited by this CarProUSA Certified Dealership was very impressive. I can highly recommend all these individuals and this dealership to anyone considering buying a Subaru vehicle in the Houston, Texas region.
