Annual Gillman Pescado Challenge Renamed “PesCorona Challenge” in Recognition of Outstanding Performance During the National Pandemic!
The annual Gillman Pescado Challenge singles out the top Used Vehicle Departments in the Gillman Auto Group and honors team members for outstanding performance. In recognition of the added problems caused by the coronavirus, this year’s contest was recast as the Gillman PesCorona Challenge.
The 2020 winning teams are Gillman Nissan, Gillman Subaru Houston, Gillman Chrysler Jeep Dodge Ram, Gillman Honda San Antonio and Gillman Honda Houston.
This year’s PesCorona “Cast and Blast” event for the winners was planned around the health needs of all participants. Held at Baffin Bay in South Texas, September 12-14, there was a major fishing tournament plus shooting activities with appropriate prizes.
Attaining goals of both volume and profit during these trying times requires exceptional performance. These highly professional retail automobile dealership managers met that challenge.
Each deserves a big Gillman congratulations for their remarkable achievements.

Everyone Wants to Eat, But Few are Willing to Hunt!
No one seems to know who first said, “Everyone wants to eat, but few are willing to hunt.” It is difficult, if we are honest with ourselves, to deny the truth in that simple statement.
In this time of pandemic uncertainty, we all face restrictions on where we can go, have unusual constraints on how we spend our time and a longing for the old normal. This creates a tendency to find a routine level of performance that keeps all phases of our daily lives in a comfort zone.
Staying in your comfort zone leads to complacency. Being complacent in one phase of your life opens the door to becoming complacent in all that you do. That includes your business performance, family and personal relationships.
Producing and enjoying good results should never be left to luck or chance. You CAN control your destiny by committing yourself to doing all the small things needed to produce BIG results. Many people are not willing to put in the work necessary to develop positive outcomes. For example, if you want to sell more cars, you simply need to create more opportunities to ask for the business.
That’s easier said than done, because it takes time and effort to ask EVERYONE you meet if they are, or know anyone who might be, in the market for a new or used vehicle.
Selling cars is a numbers game. The more people we prospect, the more deals we will work and the more sales we will have. This is the “hunting” element of the equation that many salespeople do not understand and/or practice. If a salesperson relies on others to bring food to them, their results will always be disappointing and they will be left hungry.
This principal can be applied to every business position and responsibility. It’s easy to sit back and let things just pan out. Our organization prides itself on having like-minded individuals who make things happen! In truth, the path of least resistance IS the road more traveled. It’s easy to gain a competitive advantage by focusing on the “Hunt.” That is practicing and executing the fundamentals and doing all the small things well.
As we enter the 4th quarter of 2020, my message to all Gillman employees is simple: IT’S TIME TO HUNT!

Mario Del Bosque: I recently had car problems and brought my car to the Service Department at Gillman Honda. For me having car trouble and needing help from people I don’t know is like having a tooth pulled without anesthesia. Last experience, I was charged $2,000 and later found the problem was solved with duct tape. That mechanic lives in North Dakota. Hope he froze last winter.
However, my visit to the Gillman Honda San Antonio Service Department was a vastly different experience. I had the pleasure of meeting Austin Hubbard and Jake Barcheck (#293). I was overwhelmed at their kindness and willingness to assist me.
Jake was an inspiration. He explained everything, answered my questions, showed extreme patience when I didn’t quite follow. He loves his job; he knows what he’s doing. I want to be a mechanic after being in his presence. The respect he showed me restored my faith in the youth of America.
These two men are an asset to Gillman Honda. Thanks for having them as part of the Service Department.

Received the USDT & NHTSA URGENT AIRBAG SAFETY RECALL letter in the mail Saturday, informing me of the initial recall repair as a temporary fix while new, permanent replacement parts were being developed, and now, those new parts were available! I then contacted Kyle Edney, Service Advisor, at Gillman Subaru Houston. He took full responsibility to initiate, plan, organize and design how my 2010 Forrester would be picked up from my home and a FREE loaner Subaru would be dropped off so that “permanent and final recall repair necessary to address the safety risk” in my Forrester would happen.
The process was seamless, thanks to the efficiency, effectiveness and attention to detail of Kyle but also Luis Turcios. Luis was very instrumental in sanitizing and taking inventory of any demarcations and/or damages of the loaner vehicle, in this case, a Subaru Outback. Additionally, Luis explained what he was doing step-by-step before he implemented any actions on his part with a face mask and nitrile gloves. With the COVID-19 pandemic crisis, Luis was very thorough in sanitizing the Subaru Outback for my use thereafter as well as covering the driver’s seat with a new unused plastic covering and explaining the non-turnkey fob. Upon Luis’ departure, I began to trust that he and Kyle would take care of my 10-year-old baby that only I have driven, and one other teacher to take me to and from the hospital for surgery. Upon the return of my Forrester, Luis once again showed good faith and best practices. He explained my paperwork, honoring 6-feet-plus social distancing and safety and sanitation practices. But Luis was not alone. Behind the scenes, Kyle reflected excellent customer service, project management skills, and KSAOs by washing my Forrester and monitoring that it was fully sanitized based upon my age and risk category. Kyle kept me informed regarding the when-and-where of this process. Kyle and Luis are assets to the Gillman Subaru team!!

Gillman Team Doubles Down on COVID-19 Safety and Victim Support!
At the very start of the COVID-19 threat, Gillman management and team members began implementing facility modifications, sterilization measures, sanitary procedures and precautionary training. Our goal was, and is, to have the highest possible health standards for the safety of our staff and customers alike.
Today, a multitude of hand-sanitizing stations are in place throughout our dealer-
ships. Face masks are mandatory, distancing is an accepted practice and frequent handwashing, along with daily temperature checks, are our new way of life.
More, to assist any who have fallen ill from the virus, the Gillman Auto Group has provided support programs and a unique CARE Package to hopefully help ease recovery.
Everyone with Gillman is determined to maintain the protocols directed by medical experts and conduct business in the most secure fashion possible.

Stacey Gillman and Ernest Valenzuela Bring Hurricane Laura Assistance to Dealer in Hard Hit Lake Charles, LA!
Hurricane Laura veered away from Houston, took a turn for the worst, and crashed into Lake Charles, Louisiana. Area retail automobile dealers there sustained major damage. One in particular, Billy Navarre Honda, needed special assistance.
So Gillman Companies President Stacey Gillman and Gillman Maintenance Supervisor Ernest Valenzuela grabbed one of the Gillman recovery trailers. After loading it with generators, gas, water, cleaning supplies and other necessities, they headed for Lake Charles.
Hurricane rubble turned the trip into a struggle as they forged through closed roads, flooded streets, downed power lines and miles of storm debris.
In short, they made it and a grateful Ryan Navarre heaped praise on them for their outstanding effort!

Gillman Subaru San Antonio Finds New Way to Carry on Old and Dear Fiesta Tradition in the Time of Pandemic!
Fiesta San Antonio is one of the state’s oldest and proudest traditions. It is also the largest celebration in Texas. “Fiesta,” as it is known locally, began in 1891. It is strongly supported by the Texas Cavaliers, a San Antonio group composed of top business, civic and professional leaders. One of the Fiesta main events, the “Battle of Flowers” is the only major parade in the United States that is organized and run completely by women.
In 1946, King Antonio, selected every year by the Cavaliers, began the custom of handing out coins to local children. Coins became “throws” from parade floats and then, in 1971, Charles Orsinger, a San Antonio Buick dealer, punched holes in the kids’ coins so they could be worn as a necklace. This led to the creation of the Fiesta medal. Since then, Fiesta medal-collecting has grown into a serious hobby.
The coronavirus caused the cancellation of the 2020 Fiesta, but the Fiesta medal tradition must go on. Thanks to Gillman Subaru in San Antonio, it will! A stock of specially minted official medals is available through the Gillman Subaru Parts Department. They are priced at $10 each and all proceeds go directly to the Military Warriors Support Program.

Gillman Honda San Benito Innovates Virtual New Owners Clinic!
New Owners Clinics are a great way to ensure new vehicle owners get the most enjoyment from their purchase. Holding these events gives Gillman dealerships an opportunity to introduce new buyers to the Gillman team and help create long-term customer relationships.
The question is, though, how to produce one of these valuable events during the outbreak of COVID-19, especially with current restrictions on distancing and other issues. Team members with Gillman Honda San Benito figured it out.
Accessory Specialist Will Estep, also known as “The Professor,” made videos of the dealership management team and appropriate Service and Parts Department personnel. The individual videos were put together into a Virtual New Owners Clinic!
Then it was offered as a live event on Zoom and on the dealership’s Facebook account where it remains available for viewing. So far, there are over 450 views and the number is growing daily!
